10 Ways to Stay Focused

by Daniel in General

10 tips to stay focusedIt’s that time of year when we have all slowly slipped back into our usual daily routine forgotten about Christmas and are now looking toward the next holiday.

I know it’s early, it’s very early, but are the cracks already starting to show in your plans for the year? Believe it or not it’s happening right now. According to the NY times one third of all resolution plans will not make it to the end of January. Crazy or what?

So how are you feeling right now?

Do you need to kick your own ass yet?

Well maybe not yet but hey, kicking your own ass is one way you can motivate yourself into working this year. Doing what you actually promised yourself you were going to do in those motivational moments during the holidays.

Whether the cracks are beginning to show or you are a goal busting juggernaut, these 10 stay focused tips are sure to help you out.

10 Ways to Stay Focused on Your Projects

1. Surround yourself with people with similar goals – Remember what your goals are and why you want them. By surrounding yourself with people in the same niches and talking about it, blogging about it, forum chat, Social network, literally immersing yourself in what you want to achieve you can stay focused. Try this especially with people more successful than yourself. It gives you incentive to carry on.

2. Keep a diary – Try keeping a planner of your goals and what you have achieved today, and what you want achieve the next day, and the day after that. By keeping a diary you can track what you need to do to succeed. Try writing your list for today and ticking the tasks off after each one has been reached. Check or write your list for the next day so you know what to do and how to tackle it.

3. Keep it simple – You don’t have to make a mountain out of your goals, keep them simple. Break them down into smaller pieces and deal with them this way. Baby steps rather than giant leaps! Watch your productivity soar by keeping it simple.

4. Do the worst first – By tackling your hardest project first you can eliminate the fear you have of completing your goal. By doing this you will also feel super focused and energised. There is nothing like completing something you were afraid or dubious of doing. Maybe it’s that blog post, or that report with the chapter you are a little unsure of. Do you have any fears to conquer within your goals?

5. Be positive – Attacking your goals with excitement and positivity is half the battle. If you start with the ‘can do’ attitude then you will succeed.

6. Diet – Believe it or not, diet can make a big difference to the way you work. Try to eat light and drink plenty of water. Try foods like Fish, nuts, vegetables, fruit, lean meats, even a little dark chocolate. Avoid junk food at all costs it slows you down!

7. Stay rested – Starting or continuing projects when you are tired can be a major task in itself. Your brain isn’t functioning on its full potential so you can become distracted, but you can’t simply go back to bed or use it as an excuse to procrastinate. Obviously circumstances are different for each of us, whether it be day job, kids, care etc. I suggest trying to stay focused on some easier tasks which are not too demanding rather than sitting on Facebook clicking the ‘like’ button. You know who you are!

8. Reward yourself – Set yourself a reward for the end of the week. Promise yourself something special for all the hard work you have done. If you don’t do it then you can’t have your reward. Simple.

9. Take a Break – You are not a machine, we all need a break from time to time to recharge our batteries. Structure yourself some time off. Work only Monday to Friday, and have Saturday and Sunday off. I like to think I take Saturday and Sunday off, but I am always checking my email (very bad habit I’m obsessed)

10. Time Box it – Allocate yourself a specified amount of time to complete your task or a certain task. Sometimes we can feel a deflated when we have a big task in front of us which we think is going to take a long time to  complete. Don’t worry of you don’t get it finished today, just make a dent in the work you have to do. schedule a time frame of the amount of minutes you can, have or need to work then go for it. Making small dents in the way makes a big project small. Try it.

If you are having a problem staying focused or need help with your product development you can apply some of these to your daily routine. Don’t be afraid to give them a try if you are losing focus. I’m sure they will help you out. Number 10 ‘Time Boxing’ works great for me if I’m short on time, I don’t look at the clock and think I only have an hour, I will watch some TV. I think I only have an hour what can I start, complete or build on within that hour. Time management at it’s best.

Hi Daniel
I have no problem staying focused or motivated, what I do have a problen with is taking breaks.
Once I get comfortable and start working, I don’t stop till I have to sort Eddie out.
I have a large diary for my annual goals broken into months, weeks and days. I tend to work later in the day and particularly evenings because that suits me.
I think it is important if you are a morning person to work mornings and work evenings if you are a night owl like me.
You could add exercise to your list.

Hey Dee, You don’t strike me as the person who has any problem focusing on any tasks. When it comes to talking breaks I am the same. Once I get in the zone I forgat about everything going on around me, even the extent or working in the dark!

I do try to work when I’m at my most productive, but it doesn’t always work like that with the children around. I work when I can :-)

Hi Dan,
good advice here but especially about keeping a diary and planning it helps me stay on the straight and narrow, and by breaking down what you intend to do into small steps it becomes easier.

Factoring in personal time away from the work is always important and often gives you a breather to think, I often come back from a day in th ehill bursting with ideas. In fact the complete outline of one of my own products was written on a hill top in the Lake District.

Best Wishes

Hi Robert, Its good to know people keep a diary of their tasks and achievements of their future plans.

It’s great you can escape from it all Robert. This also works for me, especially when I’m out riding or training in the gym. It really does give you time thing more and generate ideas that you wouldn’t normally think of in the office. I bet it was great sitting up there in that type of relaxed environment Robert..

Hey Dan, Great tips! Thanks so much! I have always been a multi-tasker. With my job as Caseworker for People with Developmental Disabilities, there are always all kinds of irons in the fire. I always need a to do list, I find with my Network Marketing Business, a To Do list works well too and gives me a sense of accomplishment as I can “tick” them off my list as done. Focus is HUGE and then taking action of course! Thanks again for sharing! :)

I work a lot with to do lists. I actually have one in front of me now for a product I’m working on. It’s nothing fancy just a piece of scrap paper that I wrote some ideas on while I was outlining some content. I simply work my way through that as I go.

I do have more intense stuff like mind maps, spray diagram and strategies which I outline beforehand, but my little scrap a paper has my urgent to do tasks on and the stuff I forget to add to my product development outline.

What are you working on at the moment Jocelyn?

Hey Dan

Awesome graphics, remind me a bit of high school, what I can remember ;D.

Anyway, I find the best thing I can do for m focus in anything I do is to eliminate any and all distractions. I know if you have staff they like the open door policy, but if you really want to accomplish tasks, close the door and inform everyone you are not to be disturbed for a period of time.

Take care!

Nikki Stephens January 13, 2012 at

Hey Dan,

This is the first year that I’ve actually sat down and thought properly about some goals for the year (rather than a vague “oh I’d like to do X this year”). So first, I’ve gone for the “stuff to do this year” overarching goals, and then I’ve established rough timescales (is it something I need to do every day, or for an hour once a month).

My next step then is to break those down into monthly goals, and then diarise the steps that I need to take to progress on those.

That way, I won’t get to December 2012 and be all “oh, where did that year go, I thought I was going to have achieved more”.

My trouble is that I’m a terrible procrastinator. When I’m at work (day job) I’m busy thinking about all the things I need to do outside of work (including blogging, product creation etc). Then when I do get time off (evenings and weekends), I find I have other stuff to do and so I just don’t make the progress that I want.

That’s why this year I’ve gone for the diarise-it-all approach, so that I have some sense of order, list of things to do, and some structure to it all.

Wish me luck!

Hey Nikki great to have you over here. The trick is to avoid bouncing projects. I actually sat last night and wrote 3 models in my Evernote of actions I want to take this year. I want to focus on blogging, products (current and Future), niche sites (about 10) and coaching and that’s it. Sticking with these should create a good return and a focus which I can completely rely on.

There will always be opportunities which get in the way, but you do have to take these as they come. These are always good for a quick cash flow.

I have been procrastinating all morning, watching movies on my ipad. But I’m working now so I will just tip the balance and work later tonight (yeah on a friday)

I have next week written down already on my iCal, Monday is video create for my next product, Tuesday I am visiting John Thornhill’s office for more product tweaking, Wednesday I have a webinar with Dave Nicholson for PLR Monthly, Thursday and Friday are video Creation days which hopefully should end the product.

I have also enrolled in Danny Iny’s ‘write like Freddy’ course over at Firepole Marketing to help with the blogging aspect of my business. So you could say I’m a busy guy.

Using a diary is the way to go for me too. Open it up look what you have to do then do it. If you finish early Nikki procrastinate the hell out of the rest of the day :-D

Thanks for sharing your plans Nikki, let me know how your week goes and come back here and tell me if you managed to get your tasks done.

Hey Dan,

Great post. I think this is on most people’s new year’s resolution list.

I had a complete reset when I worked out how many products you need to sell to have a full time income in 2012.

For example, to earn just $5,000 per month selling a $47 ebook you’d need to sell over 100 units per month consistently.

If you promoted it as a WSO paying 50% commission , you’d need to sell over 350 units since your affiliates generally bring in around 70% of the sales.

It made me realize that you either have to produce and sell high value products or consistently promote these to your list. I’m guessing the latter would be a lot harder ;)

Cheers,

Des.

So right Des, creating products is the way forward and at a higher end. I have seen marketing go from the wild west where anything goes to, low priced dime sale products which are worth ten times that much.

Volume seems to be the order of the day especially where WSO is concerned. The only issue I feel guys have with this, is you need a huge affiliate base to make a good amount of Money from WSO.

What JT seems to be doing is creating products selling them for a highish ticket, then a few months later release the WSO. You could work on this model Des. At the end of the day the more products you have the more you can do with them. I know our launch in February will not be a low price and will not be a WSO.

A little model you could work on which I should have in place by the ed of this year will be:

product——>
product——> filter to —–> coaching or high end ticket
product——>

Obviously this is a little crude, but the basics are the same. With a good affiliate base you should make some good returns this way.

Thanks Des

Holy crap, you read my mind!

Seriously, this is what I’m planning, but probably offering a trial continuity at $1 after the sale of the first product.

I looked at JT’s launch funnel (would love to get the stats on that) for WSO Domination and the process is brilliant. I noticed he didn’t get any flack for the upsells or downsell on the thread either. Slick!!

Yeah Des direct to CB no WSO. To be honest I wouldn’t sell this for that price it has too much value. I’m not just saying that.

We tried the $1 with PLRM, you get a lot of signups but then the subscriber base does stack up to last long. There are a ton of avenues you can g down Des. email my your Skype id and we can talk when you get around to it if you like. I’m sure I can throw some ideas your way.

As for the WSO Domination, I think the refund rate was about 2% and the upsell was converting at 20% with hardly any cancels at $7.95 p/m. IMO it was one of the best products he has ever done, and totally over delivered on it. Some WSO’s are very poor mate and are not even worth the $5 they are up for. This knocked it out the park!

Thanks Des

Sergio Felix January 13, 2012 at

Hey Dan,

Geez… don’t even know where to start mate but I’ll try for the beginning.

I have many problems to deal with, and have overcome many others in order to be highly productive.

Right now my main problem is that I am highly obsessed about email, twitter and facebook but mostly about checking my e-mail.

I haven’t really timed myself on this, but I can say that on average (and believe me, it’s a VERY LOW estimate) I think I check my e-mail at least 100 times a day (if not more).

I normally tend to work with gmail as my first tab so I’m constantly jumping around tabs and rechecking e-mail every 20 or 30 minutes but sometimes a lot more, so that’s a huge bad habit I must get rid of.

About planning, I’m very good at, the thing I suck at is actually going through my activity points.

Like Alex Jeffreys said on one of his reports, his mentor (Mike Filsaime) told him to think about the worst task as the ugliest frog and that he should definitely eat the ugly frog first. (a very “wtf” analogy but it’s the same! haha)

So I guess my problem is I only have ugly frogs so it’s a challenge to get myself started.

I am planning to learn how to plan properly, I actually have a plan of action to follow but sharing it here would mean writing a post within a post.

What I have found that works a lot for me is writing my to-do lists on my whiteboard.

I get so sick from watching the same task written there over and over that at some point I just sit myself and decide I’m not going to stop until I get to cross that one off the list in order to just be able to erase it from the whiteboard.

Another thing that I haven’t tried yet, is those timed work segments as in working for a full non distractions 30 min or 60 min bursts and then taking a very small break and start all over.

My mentor addressed this tip to me and said this works amazingly well for him so it is all about testing how I feel and roll with it.

Will let you know as soon as I put this to work, take care Dan! ;-)

And where have you been?

I have seen your twitter and Facebook likes, especially from Alex J I watched the full series and really enjoyed his take on his business model. It’s actually not as hard as you would think. As long as you have affiliates on board you can kill it. I met up with AJ last year, I think he is great guy, totally crazy and marketing obsessed hopefully we will catch up again soon.

Ugliest frog – slaying your dragon there are a lot of analogies. But the point is so true. Get the hard stuff out of the way and rest is gravy. I would say that works for business in general too. Sort the ugly frogs out man!

Is that same task the hard one (ugly frog)?

I like to schedule time, sometimes I just can’t stop working when I do, sometimes I have too. I don’t always have the luxury of a peaceful environment.

Thanks Sergio, I’m sure you will do great. You are in too deep to get out now :-D

Hi Dan, one thing i don’t have is a group of friends around me with the same interest in marketing as i do, (makes me feel a bit lonely sometimes lol).
I know that you have a good group of people that you can bounce different ideas off & ask their advice if you are stuck on something which must be a great help.
I know that i can go over to the Warrior forum for help but it really is a great help to have a closely knit group of friends ( people who you can get together with in the pub to discuss tactics lol).
Dan reason (7 ) has some good points, i for one have a full time job & by the time i get home after 8 hours graft & sometimes it’s very hard to stay focused on a project with a tired brain so that is why i seem to get a lot more done on a weekend (unless the wife sends me out shopping & then im too stressed to do anything lol).
Thank for raising these points Dan , have a great weekend,

You don’t have or need local friends Gaz. I’m sure anyone on the blog would help you if you needed it including me. Seriously just email me if you need to talk about IM. I could look at creating a post for it with opinions.

I would say you need to structure a time box Gaz, this will motivate you to do something for a short period of time. Say at 8 when the wife is watch TV take 90 minutes and see what you can do. Eve if you are doing minor tasks, sit in the living room with your laptop. I know when I am researching or drafting posts I can do this. I have an excellent ability to block out external distractions (my wife hates it lol).

Oh heck no Dan!!! I guess I’m lazer focused because I have so much going on as the new year has just started. I have two major projects I’m working on both at the same time (shame on me) but I’m getting them done. I’m so focused I don’t think anyone could disrupt that. Okay, well certain things probably could be we’re not even going there.

Great tips though so maybe on my off day later in the year (see, positive attitude here) I may need to come back and reread this post to get my focus back.

I wrote my goals and I’m just taking action. Hey, that’s how things are done my friend.

Great tips though! :-)

I worked on three products at once two years ago and it was hard to juggle them. I guess because I have doing it for a while it worked but I wouldn’t be doing it again so fast. I have walked into a PLR Monthly update and webinar as well now, so I’m at 3 alternative stages with 2 products and that’s enough. I have plans bursting out of my brain at the mo after listening Pat Flynn’s pod casting series. I just get deeper and deeper into it when really I don’t want to be yet.

Hi Dan,

I am one of those who needs to kick their own ass! I promised myself during the holidays that once the new year started, I would get serious about losing some weight. I successfully lost weight in 2010, but gained some back in 2011. I was a part of Weight Watchers, and thought I could maintain my weight loss on my own. Wrong!! So I am refocusing and doing what I need to do to lose the weight again. Tracking my food online (sort of a food diary) was very helpful for me before, and I have started tracking my food again. Wish me luck!

Whatever we do, I think we all need help in achieving our goals. For me marketing is not simple and I need to stay focused and learn more and more from others. If this means paying for extra courses and help then I will do it as I know I will benefit from it in the long term.

You could relate this to weight loss. You know deep inside you can do it, but by asking for help makes you accountable for your actions and pushes you forward.

I myself have just started on my diet again after the new year. I eat a lot of fruit, vegetables and fish. It does become a little boring but I feel so much better in myself.

Good luck Jamella and be strong :-)

Hi Daniel,

This post is simply amazing. I personally liked first point very much because to achieve the goals, it is necessary to have friendship with those persons who having same goals. But it is also necessary that we should avoid the company of people who just have negative beliefs and highly emotional because this will affect our work. So it is better to keep surrounding always healthy i.e. people with positive attitudes. I follow Neil Patel’s blog on a daily basis and he too has mentioned in one of his post that “Don’t hang out with emotional people exclusively – if you tend to hang out with emotional people too often, you’ll start embracing negative emotions.” this is true and practical.

Thanks so much for sharing a best stuff and have a rocking weekend.
