Do you have an opt-in on your blog? Do you have a blog more to the point if not you can get one from here.
If you have a blog online and you are not sure what an opt-in is or where to place one? then an opt-in is a place where your readers can become a subscriber to your blog and be kept up to date with all the most recent events and blog posts. By having an opt-in on your blog you have the ability to start building your mailing list, and by building your mailing list you have the following advantages:
- Alerting your readers of new recent blog posts – By alerting your subscribers to your latest blog post, they don’t forget about your blog and the information you are supplying. By alerting your subscribers of your latest blog posts, they will continue to read and comment on your blog. Direct emailing has a much better success rate than simply placing your blog online and hoping your RSS feed, Facebook and Twitter pages update to alert people of your new post. Email is much more direct.
- Sending out an auto responder sequence – Most email collection services allow you to have a follow-up sequence of emails e.g. a reader opts-in to your email list for updates, you first send a welcome email, you can then use the follow-up email sequence to provide your new reader with a further series of emails which are all automated. Some of the emails in your automation sequence could point the reader to some of your more informative posts, or an information loaded email newsletter. Once you have plugged in the auto responder emails it’s ‘set and forget’ all subscribers will get the same sequence of emails. It’s a real hands off approach once you have set the email sequence up. This gives you more time to concentrate on other developments.
- Sending out affiliate offers – Now that you have readers on your email list you can send out offers and updates for new, existing and affiliated products. These offers allow you to make a further income stream. Please remember if you are going to promote offers and/or affiliated products to treat your mailing list with respect. You will sell far more products and make more commissions if the people on your mailing list trust you. This is why it is a good idea to keep your blog up to date and also provide information in your auto responder. Don’t jump right to offers! Earn trust.
- Communication with your subscribers – having an email list allows you to interact more with your readers. By utilizing the auto responder feature mentioned above, you can ask your subscriber’s questions e.g. are you enjoying the content? Is there anything you can help your list of subscribers with? What about opinions? Do you have any specific questions you ask your readers?
What is Aweber opt-in email facility?
My opt-in of choice has always been Aweber they are the best of the bunch. Others include Get Response, MailChimp, iContact and Constant Contact to name but a few. Aweber is the one I have always used; they have a great reputation and lots of tools to use to help you along the way. Please feel free to check out the Warrior forum for reviews and recommendations.
By using an opt-in facility such as Aweber you are open to a lot more options than Rss FeedBurner which is another subscription I will talk about at a later date. Here area some benefits of using an Aweber opt-in subscription on your blog:
- Direct email contact
- Auto Responder service
- Custom email templates
- Subscriber Management
- Custom opt-in templates
- WordPress Webform Plugin
With Aweber you are not just tied into a single broadcast every time you update your blog, you can control what you do with your subscribers as I have already mentioned above. With Aweber you have the power to pick and choose what to do rather than just send out a feed like RSS FeedBurner does.
I have complied a fairly comprehensive video tutorial to show you have to add the Aweber plugin to your wordpress blog. Check it out and let me now what you think:
As you can see by using Aweber opt-in forms you increase your chances of subscribers and cover all the bases for increasing your subscriber levels.
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial today, you can also check them out on my YouTube channel which I intend to be building like crazy this year. I have more video tutorials planned for opt-in over the coming weeks. Next we will look at pop-ups opt-in and also some alternative opt-in plugins too.
Driving Incentives
I want to add an addition to this post which was raised Dee Dawber regarding incentives to opt-in. If you take a look on the right hand side of my blog you will see two ways to subscribe. The first is the ‘Connect with me’ button which is completely none incentive driven. The second is the ‘eBook Cycle’ which is incentive driven as it’s a free eBook. The subscriber stats are noticeably different. I have over 1400 (to date) subscribers for the eBook cycle and less than 400 for the ‘connect with me’ link.
It just shows that by giving away a free incentive for readers to subscribe will increase your mailing list dramatically. Ok I hear you saying what if I have nothing to give away? There are a lot of things you can use as an incentive:
- Write a free report about something related to your niche e.g. something you did to influence your business, a traffic tip, changes to your website or business that made it better.
- How about giving a brandable eBook away linking back to an affiliated product? If you don’t have your own product you could use an alternative. Here is a downloadable brandable eBook that you could use.
- You could promote the eBook Cycle via your affiliate link if you wish
Rather than simply placing the subscription box on the site offer an incentive to sign-up. Free reports are usually the best.
Discussion
Do you have an opt-in on your blog? Do you do anything different? Do you have any suggestions? Let me know your thoughts and your questions I would love to hear your opinions.
Also if you have any other tutorials in mind which I can help you with just let me know

Hi Daniel
I use Aweber, but didn’t use a plug in to do my opt-in form. Might try that on my next blog.
What would you reccommend as an incentive to opt-in?

Hey Dee, all done for you. I have added a section to the post called ‘Driving Incentives’ I hope this helps. Thanks for that. You reminded me that I had missed something.
The good thing about the plugin is, if you change your blog theme you don’t have to change the code just update from Aweber control panel.
Thanks for adding value
Hi Daniel
I have a lifetime membership to PLR monthly and hardly ever use it. Must get into the habit.
Check your mention in my latest post!

That’s a $197 membership Dee. Have you not noticed some of the bonus stuff Dave and I have been giving away the past couple of months. There is tons of stuff in there now.
Hi Daniel
I promise I will have a look!

Hey Daniel,
Very cool information mate, to be honest I have never used an aweber plugin before but just because I just added mine manually in the beginning and just went with that.
I’ll be tweaking my site a lot more to make a big opt-in form but that’s still a work in progress for the near future.

PS. Am I the only one spotting a clown’s face on the explosion smoke on your last blog post? o.O
Sergio Felix recently posted..Digital Nomads and Minimalism
Hey Sergio, I have just added a little more about incentives this may help you out on your blog actually.
I am going to cover opt-in popups in the next edition this may help. I am hoping to go through a lot more tweaks here. I just thought I would ease myself in with the easy ones first. I personally think my blog category structure need canning, so I will be working on that as well.
Yes it’s a clown face laughing at me! lol
Hi Dan
i think that if if you are a newbie without a list to drive traffic to you blog you will struggle to get people to subscribe to your blog unless you have very good content on it or you are offering something of great value.
I have finally signed up to Aweber after a couple of years of messing about with free ones (its just not worth it), there’s no comparison between them, im actually quite excited just looking through all of the different things that they have to offer & can’t wait to start building a few lists.
Anyway Dan i’m looking forward to you next tutorial about the pop up opt ins

Gaz recently posted..My multi purpose selling ebay template with lots of free stuff
We all have to start somewhere Gaz. I have no traffic when I started. Take a look at Sergio in the comments section. He hasn’t been going that long and is generating some good traffic by writing some great content and engaging in the blogosphere. As you have seen Gaz, if you have your systems in place now then you are ready to list build.
Subscriptions are so important in marketing and using a 1st rate service is paramount to success.
It’s great to see you took the step to Aweber Gaz. It really is or will be one the key elements to your business.
Thanks mate
Another great post Dan, Excellent content as usual, having an opt – in box on your blog is a must.
Thanks again

Thanks Kevin. I have added another paragraph to the post about driving an incentive for signing up which I think is a valid point too.
Thanks for the comments Kevin.
Hey Dan,
Great video
I learned something new again a plug-in for Aweber to install on your blog. I did not know they had this plug-in .What are the advantages of using the plug-in. I myself like the others above just installed mine manually. Thanks for inviting me over to your blog for the great lessons on opt-ins and list building.
To your success in 2012 and beyond

zora recently posted..Happy New Year 2012
Hey Zora, I don’t think it makes a big difference if you use the manual setup or the plugin. The plugin allows you to use a dedicated widget and also enables Aweber tracking on every page of your site. If you use the Aweber tracking section in your Aweber account you can track page views etc. When you install the code manually you won’t get this.
The video was really to show people how to install an opt-in, I simply chose to do it with a plugin rather than using a text widget
Thanks Zora
Hi Daniel
Yes a blog is important and getting traffic there is very important. Blogging is a great way to keep your readers informed.
Sometimes I write a blog which seems to come from left field but it is something that I think should be told. I recently wrote one about my grand son that had nothing to do with the subject matter I normally write but I just felt like doing it.
I used to email my list but I haven’t been doing that for a while now. Will have to start it back up again.
To YOUR success

Hi Sue, thank you for your comments. It’s good to write posts about alternative things now and then, it makes you human. Rather than talking about the same stuff over and over again, it’s good to let people know the real you and let them into your life a little.
You should get back to emailing your list. Blogging is free and providing info is free it’s always worth emailing your list to let them know you have or are providing more free info.
Thanks Sue.
Hey Dan,
Great informative blog post.
Like you say, we’ve all got to start somewhere and getting subscribers from your blog is definitely a start.
I reckon this goes hand in hand with leaving informative comments in forum threads with a link back to your blog via your signature link. That person then has an option to sign up to your newsletter.
I took one of my subscribers advice and removed an opt-in pop up. It was basically annoying everyone that visited, so i removed it promptly.
From my own stats, I found you get more sign ups below a blog post instead of the widget area on the top right. That’s just my experience though.
Look forward top your next post.

Des recently posted..I’m Giving Up! That’s It No More IM For Me In 2012! – NO BS 6
Thanks right Des, there are many ways to get traffic and forum posting is one of them. I personally don’t do it now as it takes up way to much time. I do like blog hopping around when I’m just sitting with my laptop. I love to read, I think I have read about 20 posts this week so far. I don’t always comment, but if I can add something I will.
I did have popup domination on one of my sub ages but it wasn’t performing. I am going to start a little bit of opt-in testing soon. I will be posting about it next week to let everyone know that I’m simply testing. We will check out what’s working against what is truly annoying
I have been doing well with the opt-in check box actually but I will talk more about that later.
If you’ve got Google Analytics installed on your blog, you can see which areas your visitors are spending most of their time.
This will then give you an idea what type of content is getting the most interest. Maybe add some similar content and see opt-ins sky rocket

Des recently posted..I’m Giving Up! That’s It No More IM For Me In 2012! – NO BS 6
Yeah I have Des, that why I haven’t installed the Aweber tracking code. I do feel my blog needs a kick in the ass where usability is concerned TBH. I could make that public on Thursday I will put my blog up for public criticism? what you think?
My first original give away product was an interview with an expert. He was kind enough to promote it to his list and help me build mine. After that I used Give Away events a number of times and they proved to be very effective and a lot cheaper than PPC.
Of course the most important elements of list building is having an auto responder. You really can’t build a list without it. I regard my A weber as a real boon!
Nahid recently posted..New Year, New Plans
I havn’t taken part in giveaway events before Nahid. Did you feel you got some targeted, engaging list traffic or just freebie hunters? I think this is why I have never really moved into adswaps either. I tried it a few times but it never really seemed to work for me.
Glad it working for you Nahid
You are quite right Daniel. Freebie hunters don’t always make very good customers, but at some of the better Give Away events you can also sell stuff if you pay a small fee and also get traffic. For me, It’s been mostly that traffic that generated some revenue.
Great stuff Nahid. If you are running any give away events let us know here and I will take a look. I’m sure I can contribute.
Of course, it’s very important to have an opt-in form on your blog. As a matter of fact, I would say that if it’s all that you had on your blog that should be the one thing. I have been using Aweber opt-in form without the plugin though. I have to check it out! Thanks for the video

Sylviane Nuccio recently posted..Four Actions To Get Your Writing Going In 2012
Hey Sylviane, I see you have a nice opt-in mini course going on over at your blog. A great incentive to sign-up rather than a straight forward subscription box. Mini courses are another great way to bring in subscribers.
I’m going to check it out now
Hey Dan,
I also use Aweber and love them. I do have an opt-in on my blog and I give people a webinar that was presented through a generic marketing system that I use. As you probably know already, I cater to the newbie so a lot of times they don’t know what to offer their list because they don’t believe they have enough knowledge to share. This particular webinar teaches them how to set up really eye grabbing free gifts to share with their readers. Then of course if they need more education in the marketing arena, this system will help with that too. But, you have to set it up so that they opt-in to your list and don’t just belong to that system.
I did install recently the Aweber plug-in so that I can capture people who are commenting but haven’t yet opted into my list. Would like it set up a little differently but I’m getting the opt-ins through this plug-in so it’s working.
Thanks for the review and the video. Great job! Aweber is #1 in my book!

Adrienne recently posted..Network Marketing Misconception #1
Hey Adrienne hope you are well.
That’s great advice for any one starting a new opt-in. By providing value you most definitely increase your opt-ins especially ‘eye grabbing gifts’ like you say. I also have that plugin which is at the bottom of the comment section. It’s working ok for the moment, but not as well as I would like. Some more testing is in order I think.
Thanks Adrienne have a great day
Hi Dan,
Another great post from you.
Subscriptions are essential in marketing. It increases visits and it also keeps people updated about your new posts. However, I am receiving a lot of emails recently from my friends. The message just contains a link. I received the same email from another friend of mine. When I asked them both about it, they told me their email hasn’t been opened for ages. I can see how some marketers are now accessing inactive accounts of other people. Seems like a blackhat technique. Anyway, I use Aweber and I always send mails to people who subscribe to newsletters and updates.
Have a Good Day,
Spatch Merlin
P.S. Now you won’t be calling me ‘how to blog’ anymore.

How to Blog recently posted..Blogging Tips and Tutorials: How to Avoid Blogger’s Burnout
This actually happened to my wife’s old Yahoo account a few weeks ago. I started to receive emails from her about random sale stuff. When I asked her she never knew anything about it? I shut the account down just after. It’s so annoying when spammers get hold of an address. This is so black hat.
Thanks Spatch
that’s better than ‘How to Blog’ as your name.
I wonder how they do it. But they can only hack accounts in Yahoo. Google’s security is tight that these people are having hard time to infiltrate in the system. Really black hat. I hope Yahoo would do something about this.

How to Blog recently posted..Earn Money from Blogging: Niche Marketing Principles (Part 2)
To be honest Spatch, I don’t use Yahoo at all. I do tend to stick to Google for generic email and of course my domain related email addresses.
Lets hope Yahoo sort this out quick.
Hi Dan thanks for the video, i just subscribed to your Blog today and i liked the way that this comments box links straight to your auto responder. I am happy with putting in an optin form but can see the massive benifits of linking this box to an auto responder series. Is it something you can do within the comment luv plugin? Thank good stuff.
Hey Al,
The plugin is called ‘Newsletter Sign-Up’ by Danny Van Kooten it works with Aweber and places the check box on the comment section. It has been working very well for me lately.
