Building Your Subscribers List with an Opt-in Part 4

by Daniel in Awesome Posts,General,Tutorials

Create an Opt-in Welcome to part 4 of building your subscribers with an opt-in. This is the last in series, I hope you enjoyed looking into how to install and where to position your opt-in.

If you missed the last three in the series, then you can take a look at part 1 here and part 2 here and part 3 here. I’m sure you will find them helpful especially if you are new to opt-ins.

In the last part we took a look at adding a graphical look to the side bar of your opt-in. This time we are going to take the same graphical idea and add it to a pop-up.

Pop-up’s are not for everyone and most people do find them irritating to say the least. But there is no escaping the fact that they work. I have seen pop-up’s on a lot of authority blogs in the past and the trend seems to be placing them on pages other than the home page e.g. the ‘About Me’ page or ‘Make Money’ pages.

In this video post I want to take a look at integrating a graphical look to the popup opt-in and adding incentive to join your mailing list. I will also show you how you can add the code to standard page such as the ‘About Me’ page or ‘Make Money’ pages discussed earlier.

As I said in the last post of this series. It has been proven over and over that giving something away for free works better than a simple subscription box.

Ok lets get to it, please check out the video below, and if you have any issues at all just let me know. I have placed some links below the video so you can download the opt-in graphic, and also a link to have your own created.

Lets get to it…

Important Download links:

1. Opt-in Graphic Download Here
3. Custom Graphics (optional) Go Here
4. Aweber

I would like to thank you for taking the time to watch this video and the full series. If you have any comments or if you have anything to add I would love to hear your opinions?

Also If you liked to series, please don’t forget to share :-D

Hi Daniel
A bit late with my comment today. Just got my laptop back from my IT guy who had to put it back together for me. Nearly a whole week without it. What a disaster! Watch out for Security Shield, a very malicious piece of software from Slovenia. (There is a reason I am telling you this other than to warn you about it)
It is resistant to even some expensive anti-virus software so Nick installed ESET NOD 32 for me which is reasonably priced and works better.
It locked my whole system up, couldn’t access anything without getting guess what?
POP UPS!!!
So if I didn’t hate them before, I sure do now.
Will come back and watch the video and dowload when I have caught up a bit.

Oh no Dee what a nightmare! I don’t download anything I shouldn’t or don’t really need. Plus I use a Mac and security on them is a little tighter.

I don’t know what I would do without a system for a whole week?

Thanks for letting the readers here know about the malicious software Dee and glad you have your system back up and running again. Close one Dee…

Hi Daniel
It can be dormant for ages or you can pick it up on social media sites. I lost all the open files, my newsletter, a blog post, an article and a freebie I was working on. I couldn’t save them and couldn’t shut the system down so switched off, unplugged and removed the battery.
It took away the joy of my laptop for a while and I have a lot of catching up to do so I will just work harder this month.

Hey Dee, I think at some point in our PC lives it’s happened to us all. I have a time machine now which backs up my stuff on a regular basis. Have you thought about a NAS drive or a backup drive?

I know how you are feeling about a large workload. I have been ill most of this week, so I feel behind now. This is why this post is a little late. We just have to pick up and keep going Dee :-D

Glad it all back up and running Dee

Hi Daniel
I burn my data to DVD but am getting a 1TB USB to back up and will do it more regularly than I do now and scan before I back up.
I had my DVDs but couldn’t load them to work on them. Have done a blog post and will do an article too on this sub ject.

Hi Daniel

Nice video! I have to say pop-up’s are not for everyone and as you say…most people do find them irritating, but they do work at getting people on to a list.

I’ve personally never used them on my blog – that’s not saying I wouldn’t rule pop-up’s out altogether though, I know you can get clever ones that know you’ve been to the blog before and only show up every third or fourth visit, or whatever you choose to set it to, where it wouldn’t be as annoying every time you return.

Great post and video Daniel…really enjoyed watching the step by step tutorials.

Catch you later,

Eamon.

Hey Eamon, thanks for stopping by mate. The reason I created this video was to show people that you can place them on alternative pages of your blog where they will be a little more tolerated.

I used to use Popup Domination which allows you to choose where you place the popup, graphic etc. I removed it due to huge problems with WP update. It upset my blog database and my blog wouldn’t work so I removed it. You can schedule the Aweber popup to do the same.

Thanks Eamon.

Hi Dan,

Hope yopu get better soon. I have just realised that you did a series on opt in. Been saving/deleting messages. I hadn’t opened your email for ages, must have thought it was the same one. I must have deleted the other ones now that you are at Part 4…lol. Oops, well, at least I am now here. Will watch all the videos at some point. I ahve done opt in’s in the past but wouldn’t know where to start.

Talk soon.

I’m one of those who find pop-ups so annoying but I do hear that on some blogs they work. Others I’ve heard people say they won’t come back if they have them so I’ve stayed away from them myself.

But this was a cool series Dan and you did a great job showing us how to make them more appealing. I feel like a pro now, well sort of.

Sorry to see this series come to an end. :-( Great job Dan and the videos were so helpful! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us next.

Hi Adrienne, Thanks for the compliments.

I appreciate the fact that it’s not for everyone, and popups do annoy people granted, but the series has done it’s job and it will be here on show for people to view if and when they need it. I just need to restructure my blog a little better now.

I mentioned it to Sergio on Twitter, so I think this is going to be the next course of action and next series. It should be primarily about getting my bounce rate down and keeping people on the page. Also where to start.

I have some plans Adrienne. Any input would be invaluable as always :-D

Hey Dan,

I don’t know what else I could contribute but I think with giving away some good valuable content will keep people on your page eager to go through them all. I think the email video series was a big hit, I learned some things.

One thing I have noticed is you aren’t on Google+ yet? I know, I know, lot of social sites now but your content gets ranked quicker since Google made their recent announcement. I’d jump on that bandwagon if I were you my friend. Too good to pass that up. Your content needs to be shared.

Have a great weekend Dan.

I am on Google+ now adrienne, I just need to get my graphics guy on to the image for it, so I can add it to the rest. How on earth am I to keep up with all this social stuff is mind boggling?

Thanks for the push Adrienne.

Have a great weekend :-)

Congrats Dan, glad you made the move. I know, it’s hard to keep up with at times but I have no doubt you can do it. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on social sites, just enough to say Hi and share a bit.

Can’t wait to see that icon in your share bar! N

Enjoy your weekend. Great job!

Sergio Felix February 2, 2012 at

Hey Dan,

Like everyone has previously said on the comments, FANTASTIC series man!

The approach I currently have on my blog is a bit more subtle. I decided to not give out anything at all in order to get only people that were genuinely interested in my stuff.

The con about this strategy, is that it is easier for people to get to know us through a report or through an ebook, the bad thing though, is that not many even open their downloads these days.

I am going to start giving out some freebies as well, stirr some things up and see what happens.

I was highly convinced on getting WPSubscribers or even PopUpDom but knowing that I can code my own lightbox and have a unique design, I think I’m going to pass on those.

Besides from what I can see in your videos, Aweber does a pretty damn good job already dealing with different types of forms.

Awesome series man, I think I’m going to go through them one more time so I’m sure I didn’t miss any important tip.

Speak soon man!

He Sergio, I am all for the subtle approach, but you do need to build your subscriber base. I see in a lot of interviews with Authority blog owners the same regret. Not building subscribers immediately.

There are a lot of ways to build your list Sergio and a free report is always a great option. Most people ignore subscription signups with no incentive. By providing a nice incentive you can add value to yourself, your blog and your business.

The Aweber popup does it’s job as good as or even better than Popup Dom as it’s not a plugin and will never be effected by updates. Popup Domination had a terrible effect on my blog when I updated to 3.3. Never again!

Thanks for the series comments, they are much appreciated. Is there anything you would like to see in a series here?

Hey Gaz, yeah they can get fairly annoying indeed. I have them one of my niche sites to check the sign-rate, and personally I haven’t seen much of a change. But more about that later.

I’m happy you liked the course Gaz. Is there anything else you would like me to cover? I have blog layout planned next which should be good.

wow, great video tutorial. Mailchimp doesn’t have that option i use a paid plugin which has the pop up ability. One of my pet peeves about popups is when they pop up immediately. I prefer or i think it’s better to have a time lapse before they popup . give the reader time to read before you slap a pop up in their face. Just my two cents. centimes, shillings.

Totally agree with you Annie, I personally don’t like them on the homepage of any site even though they do increase opt-in rates. You can structure Aweber to any time limit and also programs like Popup Domination do this also. There is nothing like getting knocked off your reading flow with a popup is there :-)

Thanks Annie

-4 here today and I believe France is going to get a spot of cold weather this week too. Looks like I will be building snow men this week lol

Going to get a cold spot? it has been freezing for a week. It snowed hee and didn’t melt right away. I should have brought my winter clothes with me.

in terms of converting i would love to find out if anyone has done any testing on say a HELLO bar type sign up form at the top vs one on the bottom vs a regular popup like the one you were talking about in this post.

I have hello bar on my blog at the moment and I will be testing these things over the course of time to see results. I need to initiate a good test period to measure over time and traffic. I am thinking about a month around, then a change? I will post my results Annie.

Just bought a new hat and scarf today as it’s going to be -5 tomorrow. I need sunshine!

Hi Dan,
pop-ups are annoying but guess what? They work. We are all talking about them. I think the key is (as you rightly point out) to offer something for free to entice people to sign up. A great looking pop-up coupled with a free report will definitely increase sign ups.

Welcome Craig and to add you are so right. They do work, but in my opinion for passing traffic. Regular readers may get a little annoyed with the popup, this is why your settings should be set to show every x amount of days or even only once.

It really is a matter of testing to see what works for you and to find the balance for your readers don’t you think?

Thanks for taking the time to comment Craig :-)

Sire February 11, 2012 at

I have to admit Daniel, I’m one of those that totally ignores those pop up boxes. Heck, I’ve even been known to move one once they pop up out of no-where when I’m reading the post.

The idea about putting it on the about page or something may be a good idea but then not everybody reads that page.

I’m not all that big on building a list so I just place a blurb at the beginning and end of the post and while I don’t get people flocking up to join I do get a few.

Oh, ans to Craig saying that people are talking about them, sure are and it’s not all positive. ;)

Hey Sire and welcome, its great to see new faces here.

I still think the general opinions of the guys here, is pop-ups are not a great addition to your blog. It will take some testing, which I will be doing.

I am going to try to force people to read the getting started pages and the about me page, so I think it could have an impact.

List building is paramount if your intentions are to sell anything or build reputation. The first lesson any internet marketer will explain to you Sire is build your list. I recommend it 100%.

Thanks for your comments Sire, much appreciated.

Have a great day.
