Why should you Create a Free eBook?

by Daniel in Awesome Posts,General

create a free eBookHow disappointed would you be if no one opted in at your blog ever?

I did have another post in mind today, but today was one of those moments when I though to myself, that can wait. I want to write about this instead. I have mentioned over the last few weeks about opt-in’s and also blog design and this post is totally related.

During the planning phase of the ‘My Blog Sucks’ series I wanted to create a great experience for the visitor to my blog. By doing this I should be able to help more people find exactly what they are looking for, which should add to a greater blog experience.

This post is quite long, so I have added a little surprise at the end.

A simple way to increase your list, brand and reputation

Do you have your own free eBook?

Yes it’s as simple as that. Do you have a free eBook which you can leverage to gain subscribers, loyalty and reputation?

I know everyone wants to make money, create products, sell them for 100’s of dollars to the masses and make thousands of dollars in return. But it’s not all about making money. Reputation and trust must come first.

Every corner we seem to turn these days, every email list we sign up for, and just about every eBook downloaded will try to sell you something at some point or another. Do you buy from them? Or rather would you buy from them?

Look at it this way, how many door to door sales people do you buy from? How many people would you buy from in the street? The percentage is pretty low right?

By no fault of their own, these door to door guys and street sellers are missing one major factor when it comes to selling. Why would I want to buy from someone that I have never met, communicated with or had the time to get to know? It all boils down to trust, trust is a major influence in sales. If the person you are trying to sell to doesn’t trust you then your sales conversion is going to plummet. ‘Trust me’ I have been there.

Why creating a free eBook is great

I have created 4 personal free eBooks during my time of blogging and Internet Marketing. 2 of those eBooks are available here on this blog 1 has not been released yet and the other is obsolete. All of these free eBooks have allowed me to build subscribers, provide information for free and gain trust. So ask yourself why creating an eBook isn’t a good idea?

With a free eBook you can:

1. Increase subscriber loyalty
2. Increase your reputation
3. Build Trust
4. Build your brand
5. Show your expertise in your niche
6. Increase your opt-in
7. Earn an affiliate income (if that’s what you want from your eBook)

lazy

As humans we are a naturally lazy, if we can find a shortcut we generally do. If there is a way of having or doing something quicker we probably will. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it helps us to move forward faster and grow quicker. But is it the best practice?

When I created an opt-in course for this blog, I supplied everyone who took part in it 3 eBooks which they could brand and distribute from their own blog. This was a fast solution, a quick solution to the harder task of creating your own eBook.

The people who decide to use the free eBook benefited from some great, instant free information to supply their readers with. As well as the opt-in, they also have the opportunity to benefit from an affiliate commission to 3 alternative products.

At this point everyone is winning, the reader wins as they are grabbing some great free info, and the blog owner wins as they are getting the subscription and the possibility of an affiliate commission. I also win as I supply the info and it links back to me and my products.

Now ask yourself who gains the trust? The blog owner gains trust for giving away the info, but more so the person writing the free eBook and supplying the free info as they are perceived as being the expert. What’s your take on this?

The next time you are blog hopping or reading a new blog, take a look at the giveaway and where it is linking too. Is it the blog owner’s material or someone else’s? You will be surprised at how many people use other people’s material for opt-ins and affiliate commissions.

Let’s not be lazy

I would really really really (that’s 3) like to see you create your own eBook. Seriously, if you own your own blog you should create your own free eBook.

Creating your own eBook can provide you with so much in the long term and give so much to others. It really is rewarding on a personal level, as well as having the benefits I described earlier. Here they are again:

1. Increase subscriber loyalty
2. Increase your reputation
3. Build Trust
4. Build your brand
5. Show your expertise in your niche
6. Increase your opt-in
7. Earn an affiliate income (if that’s what you want from your eBook)

What can you create an eBook about?

This is probably one of the most asked questions when it comes to creating your own eBooks. And it really isn’t that hard.

If you already have your own blog then it really shouldn’t be a problem. You already have your passion! You just need to channel that passion into a larger eBook size post, or take an existing post and expand on it. You can even take a group of posts and create an eBook from repurposing these posts.

As long as you have your passion, you will have no problem creating an eBook. You have the knowledge, you blog about it on a regular basis, you just have to put it all together.

Writing without passion and knowledge

For me this is a hard task. I like to know my niche before I commit to writing a report. This is not to say that I haven’t done it, because I have. I used to write content for PLR monthly in the early days. It would take me like a week of research to get a 10k eBook, so be prepared to put the time in.

If you don’t have your own blog or your own passions then you have to research and research good. Take your time and immerse yourself in your chosen niche. Read it well and absorb all the content you can before you start to create your free product.

The last thing you need is to create content that doesn’t work or gets a bad rep. Do your home work so to speak and you shouldn’t have a problem.

Tools for the job

There is not a great deal of tools you need to create your own eBook. A simple word processor and PDF converter are the tools of the trade. You will also find that most word processors have these tools integrated into the control panels anyway.

To create a free eBook you will need:

1. Word processor – Microsoft Word or Open Office (free) are both ok. I use IA Writer for the Mac which is awesome. All of these have a PDF convertor integrated.
2. Aweber or similar email subscription service to collect opt-in subscriptions.
3. Graphics – eCover for your eBook. This will cost you somewhere in the region of $10 – $20 for graphics creation.

These tools are the basics of what you will need to create an eBook. You can add to the eBook by adding graphics and images inside the eBook from sites such as fotolia and iStock. There are also some free images from Microsoft, but please check the usage rights if you use them.

Well done you got this far (freebie)

I know this was a long post and I do hope I made an impression on how important it is to create your own eBook.

As a thank you for reading this post I want to give you access to the eBook Cycle and the full 10 video training series to help you create your own killer eBook.

Step 4 – Share the hell out of this post :-D

What are you waiting for?

Have you created a free eBook? Do you feel it does well for your readers?

Have you ever wanted to create your own eBook, just don’t know how?

Hi Dan
One of my goals for this year is to create my own product so thanks for this post, it has spurred me on to get started, as usual we write down our goals but then do we make a start on them? truth is more often than not we don’t.
I know once I have created my first ebook it will be easier to create the second and third.
Thanks also for giving away access to the eBook Cycle and videos I am sure they will help me a lot.

Have a great day

Hi Daniel,

As ever sound advice, if you look at all the top bloggers and information marketers they have dozens of different ways to get you onto a list, and most start off with free reports. If you create an awesome free report full of value when you release a paid product you have an instant customer base ready and waiting to buy your information.

Lastly it doesn’t have to be perfect, look at microsoft, and note how they always updating as they release products into the marketplace and then improve them as people find flaws.

Hey Andrew,

That’s right, building trust as a provider of good info is certainly one way to increase sales.

I did listen to a podcast today from Copyblogger and they were debating giveaway products and free advice vs paid products, and how the people on your list respond to paid products when you give so much away. Sometimes it can give a negative effect as people start expecting everything for free.

What do you think Andrew?

Lol look at Microsoft, yeah that’s why I use a Mac :-) . Jokes aside you are right mate. If you spend all of your time trying to perfect your product it will never be released.

Thanks Andrew.

Use the butterfly approach, create great free content and have a relevant upsell in place to use as a OTO, eg rebranding, audio interview with an expert in your niche, video training, or a mixture of all 3.

Then also in the follow-up series make sure you train your list to expect free content via your blog and affiliate promotions. The worst thing you can do is become known as the “free content” guy, this something I learned from Robert Puddy, you always your list to know that you will make them offers.

Another great post buddy, you’re right , if you have your own blog, you should at least be giving YOUR free gift away. Once this product is finished, that will be my next project.
Thanks for the inspiration

Hi Daniel

Another great post…yup, I’ve created quite a few free and paid products and have to agree with you – getting that free product out there with an opt-in attached is great for building a prospects list.

If I were creating a free report/eBook…I would put it together as if it was a product someone had to pay for, that way I know I’m delivering high quality.

Hey Eamon,

You are so right. I see a lot of free products that look like they have simply been thrown together.

I’m sure you will agree Eamon, if you are going to create a product, especially a free one then it’s got to be the best you can do. The simple reason being, everyone is going to see it.

Thanks for your input Eamon thanks.

Hi Dan, great tips here, and actually creating an ebook isn’t as difficult as it might first appear. And I know that your product you are offering here addresses the task very well because I opted in ages ago so would advise anyone wondering if they can to get subscribing and downloading your free gift here.

I must say one thing I struggle with is the distinction between an ‘ebook’ and a ‘report’ as the name ‘ebook’ gives the impression of a sizeable document, whereas ‘report’ seems that it might be smaller, but at what point do we call our product an ebook instead of a report? I tend to go for 4-10 pages for a report and anything over that is an ebook, but wonder what everyone else thinks. And yes, I’d rather have quality over quantity any day!

Enjoy the journey.

Hi Mandy,

Creating an eBook isn’t hard at all, it just a little time consuming. However if you know your product and know your niche then you should have no problem at all. The words should just flow.

I would agree with you Mandy and say a report should be between 4 and 10 pages and an eBook larger (as big as you would like it). I think with an eBook also you should have chapters, intro etc.

Always quality Mandy :-D

Hi Dan,

This is a great post and hopefully with give people the push they need to start creating their own products. It does amaze me when I visit blogs and see loads of people continually offering the same product as everyone else. I know many of the MC students offer one of JT’s, but do understand that JT can’t really offer everyone a different product to get them started, they do at some point need to change it for one of their own.

I have to put my hands and admit that I offer another persons product from blog at the moment, but that is the start of a pretty good funnel and I will be addressing it in the near future. I have a couple of free products coming up soon, as soon as I can fit them in ;)

I have recently launched From Passion To Products, an eBook that shows people how to create hot products simply by following their passions. I will be adding some videos to it once my schedule eases up a bit.

I know you said that you wanted to create more videos this year….. Well I’m having another video challenge this year and as it’s a leap year and I’m encouraging people to leap on their fears I’ve decided to hold it from Feb 29th until March 29th.

I’m encouraging people to start creating videos as well as those that have created them to show off their skills and maybe gain some clients, subscribers, readers followers etc.

I’m also holding a little competition at the same time with a prize of Camtasia and Snagit licences.

I’m trying to get as many people on board as possible and our dear Jacinta has now challenged me to get 100 people taking part.

Are you up for it Dan? Pop over to my blog and see what you think mate, it would be excellent if you could ;)

Thanks Dan, take care mate,
Barry

I agree Barry, If you want to be an individual you need to create your own free product or paid product.

Using an alternative product other than your own is still a great way to generate revenue, but again it comes back to who you are and where you would like to be.

I seen your latest product Barry, well done. I also seen your post and was looking to fit it into my schedule. I will have a good look at it later and see what I can come up with.

I have no doubt you will get 100 people on board Barry.

Thanks for stopping by Barry cheers.

Hi Daniel
A free product is only good if it hurts to give it away. I wanted to sell my freebie so I added more content to it and then used half of it for a freebie. Unfortunately I lost a lot of data when my laptop was hacked so am starting over.
The problem I have with my freebie is floating text round images, I can do it on my blog but not in my ebook. My second problem is I get ideas for other products when I am writing! LOL!

Great post Dan,

Here is my tip: once you have your ebook created and have started to get optins it pays to check the links inside from time to time to make sure they are still valid and the content is up to date.
I have had to change some of the information in my traffic report as one site I included instructions for closed down!

Hi Dan
A great post again! Now I have a headache, so much going through my mind … a million things to do. Then I had internet issues and email issues for the past week or so. It seems like you get on a roll and obstacles keep popping up in front of you. I think I shall take a step back and try to do less but make it more productive and in the right direction. Making the most out of the time I have and still taking care of living happily I believe is the course of action for now. Probably should write down what the best use of time is for now. Thanks again.

Nothing like a good dose of information overload! Been there got the t-shirt lol.

I hate it when I run into problems when I feel like I’m on a roll too. You just have to make a stand and get over it don’t you?

You don’t have to do less, just focus and prioritise more. Pick your next task and concentrate on that until it’s done. Then move on to the next one.

Definitely write your tasks down it really helps.

Hey Dan,

Geez man I don’t have much to add here since you already know I do have a blog but I haven’t written my report/book just yet.

As a side note, I had to register on the eBook Cycle with a newer e-mail address since I already was a member there and I couldn’t figure out how to modify my account to a JV one to get the videos.

Want to thank you in advance for sharing that fantastic resource and I’m getting ready to read the whole book and watch all the videos too.

I’m 100% sure I’m going to love all of them and I really want to congratulate you for going the extra mile and releasing something that was supposed to be sold on the first place (the videos).

All the best and speak soon man! ;-)

PS. Loving your site’s changes and thanks for the reminder on my ebook. I won’t get to sleep TODAY without writing at least the first chapter and outlining it all first, you have my word on that!

Hi Dan thanks for the post.

One of the problems i encountered, i suppose you could say writers block, was the fact that sitting staring at the computer screen will not get the creative juices flowing. I find that all my ideas and i have a lot now come when i decide as part of my must daily routin was to go out running.

The internet is fantastic, but as we all no it is a massive distraction. I moved to Spain for a bit last year, as i was waiting (28days) to get my internet connection up and running, i manage to get more done off line than what i had done previous.

I had established the framework for not one but 5 books and started to compile them. This was an important step for me, as the time now needed to completa them will be minimal.

So in summary i hear it all too often “i don’t know what to write”. My answer is get away from the idea sucking machine do something different get out running or walking pen and paper in hand and the ideas will flow.

Thanks

Daniel February 22, 2012 at

Hi Al,

Running is a great way to relax and think about other things. I am the same, I find when I go to the gym my mind opens up more and I come out with some great ideas.

Moving away from distraction is the only way to get things done these days. Taking action rather than scrolling through Youtube and Facebook. It’s guys like you who will get things done Al.

Thanks for tips I’m sure the guys here will appreciate them.

Goodness, that was a long post! It is a very good point you make about building trust and authority before expecting folks to buy what you offer. I have generally gone down the route of refashioning PLR for lead capture pages and this obviously has its advantages. However, I will shortly be releasing my first eBook of original material, with giveaway rights, and I have high hopes of building a more authoritative presence in the IM niche.
