How many emails of yours were opened last week? I was very surprised to find that the amount of guys who actually opened my emails last week had improved vastly. My open rate with Aweber (my auto responder service) was a massive 20% which is an excellent statistic compared to the emails I have been sending in previous months, to which I was only getting between 4 and 6 %. I put this down to the email titles I was using compared to previous emails where I would mention product names and create emphasis on the person and what you were missing, basically to much hype for my own good.
My emphasis is now going to be on intrigue, what, why, wonder (what am I missing? I need to look at that!) and urgency from now on as it does make guys open emails. Here is an example from a few weeks ago which I used:
Check Out This Report, Now Read the Proof!
Now what is wrong with this? I feel the title is telling me to do something ‘Read the Proof’ yes this is good but there is not enough wonder or intrigue and need for me to open the email, I must improve on this.
I have been studying the emails I have been sent this week and last week to find out what other guys are sending and making comparisons to my own emails and to others. I have actually been sent some great titles, some poor ones too. But the main thing I have been looking for are the ones I open for the title alone and not a bias toward the marketer. Believe it or not, but not all the emails come from top marketers in fact I would say less than 50% only. Maybe I’m doing something wrong here? I’m not claiming to be an expert but it works for me and therefore I will stick with it for the time being.
How did I evaluate the emails I receive? I basically broke all the emails down and for me urgency and wonder appeal to me more than others, titles such as ‘This is Amazing Value’ and ‘Look What This Guy Has Done and How He Done it’ its a case of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ in these titles and the need for me to look, the intrigue gets the better of me as I want to know what happened and how it happened.
My last email title was ‘YOU WILL LOVE THIS! IT’S PURE VALUE’. Now how did I come up with this? Well for me John Thornhill’s product which was my promotion point was excellent value and I needed a headline to reflect that, but also a headline title that my list would open! Simply writing:
72 Hours of Madness is excellent value!
Is definitely not going to get a good open rate and no one will benefit from this at all. The products I promote and email guys about I want them to see value, not just a promotion for me to make a commission. I want to provide and deliver good advice of the same calibre I use for my own business. So I came up with ‘YOU WILL LOVE THIS! IT’S PURE VALUE’ by applying some of the rules above, intrigue, what, why and so on.. Yes it made me commission but it also provided excellent value to the guys who purchased (Thanks for the feedback).
Back to my headline again and why all upper case characters in the title? Well to be honest I’m not sure why I just thought I would give it a go. I feel it looks better and stands out a lot more. I actually noticed an email in my inbox last week in uppercase and it stood out so much more from my other emails it just felt right to try it. It worked
Try to remember in the future when you make a broadcast email to take some time to think about your title. After all it’s the most important aspect, its your headline to open the email. No headline no reading! Think about ‘What You Would Like to Read!’ Remember to add ‘Open Me’ value to your titles with intrigue, value, wonder and urgency, with these key items added to the email you should see your open rate increase and your subscriber feedback and value increase too. From a couple of emails I have seen both valued feedback and open rate increase also.
Go ahead and give it a try! If you have any questions let me know.

I have been online marketing since early 2005 where I started selling eBooks on eBay before the digital download ban. Once the ban took effect, I made the decision to take my business online and into general online marketing. eBooks were a good way to build affiliate revenue and mailing lists, but it was my blog and online marketing where I found my passion....

Hi Daniel, some interesting points here, my best open rate is 13% thats when I am giving away something for nothing the average is as you say between 4-6%. I have noticed that Ray Johnson always puts his name in capitals and it does stand out. I will try what you suggest and see what the results are. Thanks for a good post.
Cheers
Rob
Hello Robert,
I will monitor this for every future event i.e. promo’s, freebies, and blog posts and see what I get. Let me know how you get on with your testing it would be interesting to know. Thanks for the reply!
Dan
Hi Daniel,
Excellent post. By looking at what makes you open an email, you can get a good idea of what works in a title. I confess that I sometimes forget to give the title of my AR emails the attention they deserve.
Also, I’ve found I have better success when sending something repetitious, such as a newsletter, with the same title each time. For example, “your Cookin Kids March Newsletter is ready!”
Thanks for the insights.
Peggy
Thanks for the comments peggy.
I think a lot of us need to pay a little more attention to our email title a little bit more.

Twitter AND Clickbank combined “is” a powerful tool, which can really speed up your sales. But naturally you have to choose the “right” products and do some research.
First you will start going to Clickbank Marketplace and look for products with a gravity rating over 100. Then you see what keywords are fitting best for this product and after this you go to your Twitter account and use a new very efficient tool, which you can find described here:
