Are You Multi Format Blogging

by Daniel in Awesome Posts,General,Special

Multi Format BloggingThe simple text blog is not dead, quite far from it. In fact you are reading one right now. But the problem is, there is just too much to lose by not working in multi format and exploiting every type of online communication possible. After all it is 2012 and the age of multimedia is here to stay. The sooner we all realise the importance of alternative media on our blogs the greater they will become.

What do I mean by multi format?

I’m talking about:

1. Video posts
2. Audio posts
3. Image posts
4. Text posts
5. Hybrid posts

Are you doing all of these yet? If not, you are missing out on some valuable traffic generating platforms and super cool engagement from your readers.

The way the world works today is a lot different to the early days of traditional, although still popular blogging in simple text and image format. Maybe you haven’t noticed but, how fast are we moving these days? The technology we have today enables us to work anywhere at anytime, we are no longer location dependent.

For example, after taking my daughter to school, I walk home and check my email with my smart phone. I delete anything unwanted, and keep what I need to address when I get home. I also check out Facebook, watch any online videos that friends have shared or from the emails I have in my inbox. Yes I do all of this when walking home. Amazing isn’t it (or just crazy)? Not only do I do this but I also have podcasts on my iPhone which I listen to whenever I have spare time.

My point here is not to go out and buy a smart phone, although I could not live without mine. The point is, we have so many choices and media platforms to choose from, it would be crazy not to utilize them all. We all love consuming information, now we can get it anytime anyplace anywhere!

Why video is cool

Online video allows us to create and display information quickly and efficiently without the need for images and drawings. Before YouTube (yes I was here), I would create text tutorials with images and arrows pointing to what to do and where to go next. With video it takes a tenth of the time to create and they are 100 times easier to follow.

So why is video so cool?

  • You can create a tutorial series to help people out with problems they may have
  • You can increase engagement, by creating face to face time with your visitors, which builds trust
  • How about a product review of physical product?
  • Creating video allows viewing on the move (can you read while walking?)
  • It’s easier to consume
  • You can project your expertise in your field

YouTube is a king of video content, there are others but they don’t come much better than YouTube. It’s one of the largest search engines next to Google, so this means it’s a traffic hot spot. Why would you not want to be part of it?

Late last year I had a conversation with Adrienne Smith about video content and how we were both going to ramp it up this year. The conclusion is, it’s an absolute must! Check out this guest post by Paul Wolfe at Adrienne’s blog, he talks exactly about how video content is exploding.

Face your fear

We all have that scary moment when we are one step away from being out of our comfort zone. If video is that step away, its time to cross the line.

Quote: “Do one thing every day that scares you”
Eleanor Roosevelt

Naturally we avoid what we find uncomfortable or things we are dubious about. Creating video is no different. I still remember my first video (terrible), but I carried on, now it’s no issue at all. I actually find video easier now. There is no trick you just have to go for it! Sergio did, check it out!

Challenge: If you haven’t created a video before, create one I want to see it.

Here is a list of tools you can use to create video and upload to YouTube:

Hardware

1. Smartphone
2. Flip Cam
3. Camcorder

Screen Capture Software

1. Camtasia (my favourite)
2. Screen Flow (Mac)
3. Cam Studio (free)

All of the above tools will help you create awesome online videos. So come on let’s see those YouTube channels exploding!

Audio is Awesome

I hold my hands up on this one, I don’t have a Podcast. Or rather I don’t have a podcast yet. I have created a number of audios, but not made them all available to the public. I do have one audio interview on my blog which I recorded with John Thornhill. The audio is about the eBay digital item ban and was done a long time ago with minimal tools for the job. I’m sure all we had to use was a cell phone.

Over the course of this year I do intend to create a Podcasting channel, it seems like the next logical step for me, and one that I think would be so much fun. It’s always good to talk and communicate with others in the form of interviews and information sharing talks. Audio is perfect for this.

Today, we have a world of audio tools at our fingertips so creating and sharing is so much easier.

Tools such as:

  • iTunes
  • Improved microphones
  • Skype
  • Skype recording software
  • Audio cutting software

All the tools you need are available to you for free to create great audio so why wouldn’t you give it a shot?

You no longer have to write your post, you can talk about it with audio, you can interview with audio and you can product review, all in audio format. This allows your readers to take it with them on the move, in the car, walking home from the school drop off, on the train; I guess you get the point.

But did you know by creating a podcast, you enter into a completely different marketplace and engage your readers/listeners on another level again. This is also another source of traffic from iTunes and social networking shares. And most definitely one you need to be looking into in the future.

Here is some ‘on the move’ listening for you

1. Check out Dawn Kay’s first audio interview podcast over at her blog.
2. If you are interested in creating your first podcast, check out Glen Allsopp’s first experience with podcasting post over at ViperChill  awesome stuff.
3. Also here is what I am listening to right now. Pat Flynn, has some amazing interviews, business techniques and motivational podcasts  providing some super cool information over at Smart Passive Income.

Do you think you could create a podcast?

Are hybrid posts all hype?

Moving further away from the traditional blog style, how about a hybrid style blog post? Mix it all up with text, graphics, audio or video. This can engage your readers on so many levels by bringing all your content together as one multi format blog post.

Obviously placing video and audio on your post is rare, but mixing traditional text with audio or video is very common now. Don’t just place a video on your blog, why not video yourself talking about your blog post, the advantages and the benefits of what you have just written. If you feel you haven’t explained your tutorial or the information in your post, you can add to it to create a greater sense of interaction.

Audio is great for engaging your audience also. By creating great content and backing it up with an expert interview from a special guest at the end. Your audience can either listen right there and then, or take the audio away and listen. By doing this you add massive value to your blog posts. You can also send out follow-up emails to your readers to ask them if they have listened to the audio to further help with engagement.

As you can see, by multi format blogging you can greatly improve your audience experience, enhance the quality of your blog and drive traffic from multiple platforms. Now is the time to bring it all together.

Do you agree? Let me know what you think?

Hey Tony, hope you are well. Yeah the 400 word post is just not really cutting it anymore unless it’s a complete golden nugget if you know what I mean. Audio and video are becoming bigger than ever, so we all need to get on board.

Thanks Tony

Hey Dan,
I all for up for this.I did have an earlier flutter into blogging that was more about videos. It didn’t quiet workout as I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing at the time.

But how much easier is it to upload a 3-4 minute video than typing out a load of text. Also it does allow you to get over your personality easier, you can stop trying to persuade you readers how ‘cool’ and ‘fun’ you are and actually show them. There’s a guy called Gideon Shalwick that talks about video blogging a lot thats where I first got an insight into it.

As soon as I get myself a camera I’m going to be on.

Hey Dave, Welcome back man. I find the easiest way if you are doing face to face stuff is to use a Flip cam. It’s basically point and press, then you can upload to YouTube directly with the built in software. No need for anything else really.

Thanks Dave

Hi Daniel
It took me long enough to learn how to do images! It took me a while to learn how to float the text, but I did it eventually. Then I put a YouTube video on my blog, not mine, but it was a huge achievement for me.
I still have a learning curve of other things before I get into my own videos and audios, but probably will some day.

Awesome Dan, I too am just getting into the video production. Haven’t got one on my blog yet, still producing them for my first product release but now that I’ve done couple I’m starting to get the hang of it and I actually love it.
I was terrified at first but once I got one done and learned the editor program I have, no big deal and really fun actually to create a video and see the final product. It was a relief to find out I’m not a total boob at it. lol
Again great info, thanks.

Hey Kelly, its cool once you get over the initial fear of listening to yourself and talking to a screen. It’s nothing for me now, I find it more of a chore producing the video material than actually shooting it. I guess you just get used to it after a while.

I shot a 15 minute video standing in front of the camera last week teaching mind mapping. That was my first really long experience in front of the camera and it worked out great.

I will be showing that video here in a couple of weeks so stay tuned.

Hey Dan,

Great blog post yet again.

I agree totally. I think if you want to take your blog to the next level, you need to add pictures, audio and video.

If you’re not confident yourself, then simply embed someone else’s YouTube video if it’s related to your topic. Then, once you find the confidence there’s great free tools like:

http://camstudio.org/ – free recording software
http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html for screencasts & and image capture
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ – free graphic editing software and
http://www.paint.net/ – free graphic editing software

You can also get royalty free pics for Microsoft at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/images/?CTT=97

and

Free icons from iconfinder – http://iconfinder.com/ (just remember to use the license filtering on the right hand side.

Embedding YouTube is the first step and one we should all try. Then move swiftly on to your own videos.

Thanks for the links Des. I didn’t amt to put too many in my post this time, and was kind of hoping someone would put them in the comment section. You came though good mate.

I have bookmarked the image link which will come in handy. I will check that out later. My hosting company 1and1 has a huge image galery which I can use, also I have an account at Fotolia, but they are getting expensive.

I find icon finder great. It’s funny but I see guys selling packages of images and icons which you can get for free if you only look for them.

Hi Daniel

That’s a great layout you’ve illustrated. I haven’t been blogging as much as I should be…yeah I know, I’d need to get one up :) .

Videos are great and I’ve been using video myself now for quite a while and I’ll agree with you that it really does save a load of time, especially when creating products. I haven’t used audio on my blog as I mostly go with video, but I have used audio in some of my products and the feedback was people loved it, so audio really does add value, maybe someday I’ll start putting the odd audio up on my blog too.

People here have mentioned most of the great software’s available to use.

Here’s two audio software I use when I’m thinking of doing some audio…

As for video, I know you have been working hard on new products, and you know that video is easily the most important part of your product if you are conducting training. I’m sure you will agree it’s now an essential part of online communication and must learn for everyone out there.

I use Camtasia and Audacity for audio cutting. Audacity more so as it so easy to use and it’s free :-D

Hows the traffic systems going mate? Any nuggets to share here?

Reply

Dave Whitworth January 27, 2012 at

All those kids and parents laughing at you. It’s as much embarrassing as it is painful.

I wasn’t going to mention the traffic systems. I don’t want to be seen as someone who blatantly plugs their sites. :)

But seeing as how you asked!
30 Day Traffic Flow has been a great experience for me and whilst it is great to see some cash coming in, at this stage it is more about the process of product creation and the relationships I am developing.
At some time in the not too distant future we may release 30 Day Traffic Flow as a WSO.

I have my second product Traffics Cool (check my link) which has tons of stuff about traffic and list making.
It has a free front end offering 7 free reports and there is an upsell of $10 which is really low compared to the content inside.

It is slightly different than 30 Day Traffic Flow as there are things in there that show members the basics of site building and how to make money from blogs.

It has an affiliate area for anyone who would like to earn a few commissions. Just sign up for free and everything is there for you to promote (blatant plug over).

It is my intention to concentrate on traffic and list building and try to build a sort of center of excellence.

Now you are the first person to know this next piece of information. Last night I had one of those sleepless ones where ideas flit in and out of your head. You know the ones I mean!

I came up with an idea for another product about list building, traffic generation and making money online by using pdf reports.
I know there are plenty of similar guides but I intend to show someone how they can take any pdf report from anywhere, and as long as they have rights to edit it, how to make money with it whilst getting traffic and building their list at the same time.

The principles I will teach will also hold good for anyone who is thinking of publishing a Kindle book.

Hi Daniel,
this is serendipity. I was just at Adriane and Paul’s blog reading about video. I ‘m ramping up on video’s and hybrids in 2012 too. I put up audio on my about page as an experiment and made an intro video for my site. There’s a bit of a learning curve with the video editing software but i think it’s going to be worth it. There’s something about seeing and hearing someone talk vs just reading it. It’s so much easier to consume and easier to understand the nuances you don’t get from reading.

Before we set out on our vagabond life, we had a very suburban life style so they are missing that. Marseille is far from suburban but at least we are near water and sun and sports and have a place to hang our has.

So much to do Dan, so little time. Dang it, did you have to give me even more stuff to do now?

I love how Steve Scott puts images in his posts. They really stand out and say a lot. I did this on one of my other blogs but I didn’t see a different in traffic or comments when I was posting on both.

I do mix up the video but have yet to do any audio. I know, I know… It’s suppose to be a must now but I just haven’t done it yet. So you are most likely right that we all need to mix things up a bit because a lot of people are viewing our content on cell phone, iPods and iPads now. Which is why I’m incorporating more video this year so that I am doing.

Thanks for the heads up, I think! :-)

I think hybrid articles are the best. However just a video or picture added to a two phrases text won’t work. Readers might be at work, so they won’t be able to hear it. However, a text that would catch their attention may convince them to come back for the video/audio the moment they can hear it.

Hey Dan,

Another amazing post from you my man, I really need to start bookmarking these articles for future reference!

I couldn’t agree more with you about using multi-format blogging because after all, every visitor is unique. I have seen tests and surveys where people say they prefer to read, others prefer to listen and some others prefer video.

I think that by using a combination of these formats on our blogs, we not only improve the user’s experience on our site, but it also allows us to create multi-format content when we deliver training material.

Something that has become a MUST on these days, right?

Anyway, my blog is mainly text-based although I did try using video and audio in the past, the time that visitors spent on the site improved by quite a LOT I must say.

I will definitely go back to hybrid blogging, I’m working on a project right now that includes a little bit of everything (audio, video, images, text, etc) and I believe that is going to be GREAT to keep me accountable on my own blog and articles.

Speak soon Dan, all the best and thanks for all the great resources mentioned on the comments, there are a few I never heard of myself. ;-)

Hi Dan,

It’s my first time visiting you here and I tip my hat to you, dear sir! This article was not only informative, but I would venture to say you’ve outdone any expectation I had about what you would deliver here.

I agree that with the emergence of the smartphone, it’s as if the internet put on it’s Nikes, slapped us in the back of the head, and started running circles around us. We need to evolve with the technology lest we fall into obscurity.

I haven’t yet begun podcasting, but this is something that’s on my list for 2012. Vlogging has been a lot of fun for me. Like many, I initially approached it with a level of trepidation, but found that it was a fun way to bridge the personal touch that only comes person-to-person to my audience. I was also shocked at the amount of foot traffic that was produced as a result of establishing a proper posture and directing people to an appropriate place where I could monetize the traffic in some way.

This was a huge dose of awesomeness that you shared with us here. Thanks for overdelivering!

Highest regards,

Blogging for me started as fun and still is fun. I don’t need to do it as I have other businesses in place. But, I love it and it allows me to connect with everyone and I have made so many new online connections. I learn so much about people by blogging :-D

Thanks for the great comments Cat. I look forward to more communication in the future thank you.

Dear Dan,

Thanks for that warm welcome. I really appreciate it! :D It’s always nice for me to meet people who seem interested in actually connecting. It’s evident when people are online for 1-sided reasons, which I do not “judge” necessarily…but let’s just say that it’s more fulfilling to have a real conversation! I think we can leave it at that. lol

I think I’m probably a lot like you in terms of smartphone usage. What a fun and quickly paced world we have these days. The smartphone opened up so many doors, especially for those who are creative and on the ball.

I’m happy we’re connected now and hope to stay that way, Dan. Love what you’re sharing here. True value indeed. I’d venture to say you’ve outdone yourself with this one, but I reckon I don’t know you all that well just yet! ;)

Be well and thanks for what you share!

Hey Cat, the pleasure is all mine. I can understand where you are coming from when you say one sided. I remember the days of offer after offer after offer and no connection. I guess a lot of people start out this way wanting just to make money, rather than getting to know the audience.

I have just ordered the new iPhone 4S today, and I would say it’s going to improve productivity a little more (I have a productivity issue).

It’s great to here from you again Cat and I’m sure we will catch up very soon :-D

Have a great weekend!

Hi Dan, what a great post mate.

You’re so right, we live in the 21st century, so we should be using the tools and techniques that are available. Keep up or get left behind is my attitude towards using the tools available.

I’ve been creating videos since I got my hands on Total Web Traffic and it was scary at first. i didn’t have a clue what to create videos about so I made one about setting up an auto reply message in outlook express and to date that has been my popular video with over 3000 views.

If people are stuck for ideas then Adrienne’s guest post with Paul is ideal as it generates so many ideas we can run with.

As you know I’ve recently interviewed Adrienne and have been thinking of trying to create a video from it as well. Having read what you said about hybrid post I think I’ll give it a go and mix it up with all 3 items available, audio, video and ebook.

I’ve still to create the product but will do very soon. I’ve just launched my new product so once I’ve dealt with that i’ll move onto Adrienne’s.

Catch up soon Dan,

Barry

Thanks Barry, I have been reading, listening and watching so much lately it’s the only way to go. The era of multi format is here and it needs to be addressed.

Wow, the last time I used Outlook Express I was selling eBooks on eBay. I think I have a text tutorial on how to do that :-D

As far as ideas go we should never run out of things to write about. There is so much info readily available in so many forms, we simply need to take action.

Great news about your product Barry well done!

Thanks for stopping by.

Hey Dan,

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the link to SPI, and I have to reiterate the power of multi-format blogging. It’s been amazing for me – the podcast and youtube channel have just each passed 1 downloads / views each, and the reach is far beyond what I thought it was going to be.

It definitely rounds out a blog and turns it more into a brand that can capture new audiences on these other platforms, and put yourself in more of an authority position to your existing audience.

I liked that you touched on the hybrid model too, because then I think you give one spot to share a message in whatever way people want to consume it.

Thanks again, and I wish you and everyone here in your audience all the best!

Hey Pat,

Wow thanks for taking the time out to visit. I have been reading and listening to your material for a long time now and you really deliver on quality every time. Your Podcast is awesome and I recommend anyone to listen to the series.

I am also hoping to start my own Podcast soon, so I will be visiting SPA for some tips.

I do find the hybrid model can be quite time consuming, but it does deliver great content for many to consume in the way they want to. I admit that every post will not be like this but it is good to mix it up now and then :-D

Thanks for taking the time to comment Pat it means a lot.

Stumbled upon your website from Smart Passive Income. Love the content! I am just working on a text-ed based blog right now, but I see so much potential after reading you article. Now I have to figure out how I want to expand my blog.
